On Friday the 27th of November, 2009, the Cambodian government announced that they had cancelled the loan from Thailand; however, on Sunday the 29th of November, 2009, officials said that Thailand’s multimillion-dollar loan for a project to repair the National Road number 68 is still on the table.
According to Mr. Sou Phirin, the governor of Siem Reap Province, the Thai Prime Minister Mr. Abhisit Vijjajiva called the Cambodian Prime Minister Mr. Hun Sen on Friday and asked him not to cancel the loan. In response to this, Mr. Hun Sen told the Thai leader to send his assurance of loan in a written letter.
It’s worth mentioning that the agreement of the loan was made in late August to finance repairs of National Road number 68 which connects the 113-km road of Siem Reap Province’s Krolanch District with the town of O’smach near Thai border in Oudormeanchey Province.
The relationship between the two countries has turned sour after the appointment of fugitive Thai ex-prime minister Mr. Thaksin Sinawattra as an economic adviser to Mr. Hun Sen.
Despite this controversy, the Cambodian Prime Minister Mr. Hun Sen is scheduled to attend the upcoming opening ceremony of the 113-km roadway on the 5th of December. And according to Mr. Phirin, the event will take place whether the Thai loan is finally secured or not.
